1987
BUILDING A FOUNDATION

In the middle of the Gulf of Mexico on an oil and gas production platform, an 18-year-old JD Dodson learned the true meaning of hard work.

HARD WORK PAYS OFF

Spending all his college summers on that platform allowed JD to pay 100% of his way through a college education. He learned firsthand how hard work and education lead to opportunity. These principles would become a driving force in his career and, ultimately, the founding of RPM.

1991
TELECOM DEREGULATION

JD got his first taste of the corporate world working for MCI and experiencing the deregulation of the telecommunications industry.

IN A WORLD FULL OF SERVICES, BE A RESOURCE

During his time at MCI, JD learned that success would come from making himself a resource to clients, not purely a commodity product with a rate/minute.

2001

ENERGY INDUSTRY ROOKIE

The passing of Senate Bill 7 in 1999 gave way to electricity becoming deregulated in the state of Texas. Having recently earned his MBA, JD joined Reliant Energy. Instrumental in starting their North Texas operations, JD quickly began working with some of the area’s largest organizations, including Mary Kay, Acme Brick & Siemens, to help inform & guide them through the newly deregulated market.

2002

LIGHTBULB MOMENT

While viewing a presentation introducing a new billing penalty called Power Factor, JD realized that the market needed more than just a brokering service. It needed a service that could help clients understand and mitigate the impact of hidden fees and inefficiencies.

ELECTRICITY DEREGULATION (TX)

JD began to see that industry leadership was more focused on stock price than clients, an approach to business and customer service that was in opposition to his customer-centric values. In reaction to his growing frustration, JD began to ponder the idea of creating his own company.

SEPTEMBER 1, 2002

Despite having just started a family, JD made the bold decision to leave his stable corporate job and start Rapid Power Management.

2007

EXPANDING OUR RESUME

Our technical expertise was solidified when Oncor brought us in on a drilling project with Chesapeake Energy. They needed our consultation on how to connect their rigs to the power grid – we invented a portable electric rig that reduced drilling emissions and operating costs.

2012

SOFI WAS BORN

After 10 years of growth and building our brand, JD wouldn’t settle for a big-name CRM platform. He worked with staff to create a completely custom, leading-edge internal platform named SOFI. She was built to revolve around the client, and, in turn, increase operational efficiency.

2013

BREAKING INTO THE FORTUNE 500

2015

OUR NEW HOME

Since day one, JD envisioned RPM as not only an office, but an educational venue. He wanted a space to showcase RPM’s culture, to convey our historic journey, and to promote sustainability. This led to the custom construction of our current standalone building on the cusp of the Carrollton/ Plano border. Come visit us!
